Brogya Genfi, Director of Special Duties for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has described the 24-hour economy policy proposed by former President John Dramani Mahama as a groundbreaking initiative that would be a "first of its kind" in Ghana.
Genfi emphasized that no Ghanaian business currently operates on a 24-hour shift basis, making this policy a transformative vision for the country.
In an interview on NEAT FM's morning show ‘Ghana Montie,’ Genfi stated that a Mahama-led administration would introduce this policy to support businesses, increase productivity and stimulate economic growth.
"Here in Ghana, we don’t have anything like a 24-hour economy. Mahama’s plan will be the first, creating a framework for companies to operate continuously.
“This policy is specifically designed to help businesses grow,” Genfi explained, calling it a "game changer" for the country.
The policy, unveiled as part of the NDC's manifesto at the University of Education, Winneba, would encourage certain industries to run 24/7 through a system of three 8-hour shifts, promoting job creation, competitive wages and increased productivity.
According to Mahama, this shift aligns with global trends where major economies have implemented various kinds of 24-hour operations.
He explained that countries like the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany and France, as well as cities such as Sydney in Australia, currently operate on 24-hour economic models, contributing significantly to their economic prosperity.
Mahama emphasized that this policy will be tailored to Ghana’s specific economic needs and designed to build an enabling environment for businesses to thrive around the clock.
