Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia on Wednesday, October 30, announced the launch of GoRide, a Ghanaian-owned ride-hailing app aimed at easing the high commission rates imposed on local drivers by foreign ride-hailing platforms.
The app was introduced as part of a broader strategy to bolster local businesses and improve the livelihoods of Ghanaian taxi drivers.
The Vice President highlighted the challenges faced by local drivers in his social media announcement, stating that the entry of international ride-hailing platforms has created stiff competition, which has adversely affected both traditional and ride-hailing taxi drivers.
“With the increasing presence of international ride-hailing apps, our local drivers have faced immense challenges, particularly with high commission rates imposed by these platforms,” he said.
In contrast to the foreign platforms that often charge higher commission fees, GoRide offers a significantly lower rate of 10%.
The NPP flagbearer stressed that this reduced rate allows drivers to retain more of their income, thus improving their financial stability.
“With a competitive commission rate of just 10%, unlike the very high charges of the others, our drivers are being empowered to retain more of their hard-earned money,” he stated.
GoRide has been specially designed to cater to the unique needs of Ghanaian drivers, integrating features that align with the local taxi system.
This initiative is seen as a critical step in protecting and advancing the business interests of traditional taxi operators in Ghana’s increasingly competitive transport sector.
“The launch of GoRide…represents a bold step towards upgrading the business and competitiveness of our local and taxi drivers,” he explained.
