The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has issued a strong warning to the public, cautioning against the unauthorized use of military-pattern uniforms and accoutrements.
In a press release dated October 14, GAF emphasized that anyone caught wearing military attire without authorization will be arrested and prosecuted to the full extent of the law.
The warning comes in response to a rising trend of civilians donning military-style uniforms during public demonstrations and in other settings.
Recent protests in Accra and Kumasi have seen some individuals, including private security personnel, wearing camouflage uniforms similar to those worn by GAF.
The Armed Forces also observed this illegal practice during operations against illegal mining activities, known as galamsey, and among certain political activists.
These actions are not only illegal but also damaging to the Armed Forces’ reputation, GAF noted.
“Such actions risk creating the false impression that these individuals are part of GAF, thereby tarnishing the reputation of the Armed Forces,” it said.
The unauthorized use of military attire is a violation of the National Liberation Council Decree (NLCD) 177 of 1967, which prohibits anyone from wearing military uniforms unless they are members of the Ghana Armed Forces.
Beyond tarnishing GAF’s image, the use of military gear by unauthorized persons poses significant security risks.
“The misuse of military attire can facilitate impersonation and enable criminal activities, posing a serious threat to public safety,” the Armed Forces warned.
In response to the growing trend, GAF announced its intention to take swift and decisive action.
“GAF will henceforth take decisive actions, including the arrest of persons who violate these regulations to face the full rigour of the law,” it said.
