As born-again Christians and peace-loving adherents of various faiths, we're distinguished by our commitment to peace, tolerance, and unity. However, a disturbing trend has emerged in the United States, where some individuals claim to be Christian leaders while promoting divisive and harmful ideologies.
Former President Donald Trump is a prime example, posing as a Christian sent by God to rescue America while displaying an alarming disregard for the law and constitutional edicts. According to 1 Timothy 4:1, "The Spirit says clearly that in later times, some believers will desert the Christian faith. They will follow spirits that deceive, and they will believe the teachings of demons." This scripture serves as a warning to discern sound doctrine from false teachings.
The Dangers of Blind Loyalty
- Undermining Democracy: Trump's actions erode trust in institutions and undermine the rule of law, as evident in his handling of sensitive documents and disregard for congressional subpoenas.
- Sowing Discord: His divisive rhetoric fuels hatred and intolerance, harming vulnerable communities, such as immigrants and minorities.
- Contradicting Biblical Values: Trump's behavior contradicts fundamental Christian teachings, like loving one's neighbors and seeking justice.
To combat these dangers, we must seek wisdom and discernment in our leaders, rather than blindly following those who claim to represent our faith. As Jessica Van Roekel eloquently puts it, "Wisdom from God is pure, peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy, good fruits, impartial, and sincere" (James 3:17) ¹.
In these uncertain times, we must cling to our values of peace, tolerance, and unity. We must pray for discernment, recognizing the difference between sound doctrine and false teachings.
A Prayer for Discernment
Holy God, we pray for wisdom and discernment in these tumultuous times. Help us recognize false prophets and harmful ideologies. Grant us the courage to stand against injustice and promote love, forgiveness, and compassion. May our faith be a beacon of hope, guiding us toward a more just and harmonious society.
