This year's annual Upper East Regional Inter-District Basic Schools soccer and volleyball competitions have taken off at the Bolgatanga Secondary School sports field at Winkogo in the Talensi-Nabdam District.

The week-long event would see 608 boys and girls from eight municipalities and districts in the region competing for laurels in Under-15 as well as Under-12 soccer and volleyball competitions.

The eight municipalities and districts are Bolgatanga, Bawku West, Kassena-Nankana, Talensi-Nabdam, Garu-Tempane, Builsa, Bongo and Bawku Municipality.

In the volleyball competition, they presented 20 boys and 18 girls respectively for the girls and boys Under-12 volleyball competitions.

Giving an overview of the competition, the Upper East Regional Physical Education Organiser of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Mr Joseph B. Kwogyenga, said the Under-15 teams would be made up of pupils whose weight were not more than 54 kg and were in basic school.

With the boys' soccer, he said the competition would be played on a round robin basis in zones followed by semi-final and final knockout matches.

The PE organiser revealed that each match in the soccer competition would last for 60 minutes, while in the volleyball, the best three sets would be played at all stages of the competition.

The competition is an annual event organised by Nestle Ghana Limited in partnership with the GES to discover young sports talents who would be groomed into future stars.
