The immediate past National Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, has said aides of Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia are abandoning their positions in the NPP flagbearer’s office to contest as Members of Parliament because they sense defeat for the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2024 elections.
Addressing party supporters during the campaign launch of Bismark Tetteh Nyarko, NDC's candidate for the Upper Manya Krobo constituency, Dr Ofosu Ampofo questioned why people close to the Vice President who are supposed to be focused on working to help the NPP achieve victory are rather seeking alternative positions.
"How do people who are walking with the Vice President and working in his office, all of a sudden, change their minds and contest as MPs?" he asked.
Dr Ofosu Ampofo asserted that the actions of Bawumia's aides suggest that "even those closest to Dr Bawumia do not have confidence in his chances of becoming President".
He added: "If you truly believe your presidential candidate is going to win the election, why abandon your special position to seek a parliamentary seat? This is a clear indication that even those closest to Dr Bawumia do not have confidence in his chances of becoming President."
The former NDC Chairman further stated that "The NPP itself knows that John Dramani Mahama will win the next elections, so they are looking for positions where they can remain relevant in opposition."
The claims by Dr Ofosu Ampofo come as the spokesperson for the Vice President Dr. Gideon Boako is representing the NPP for the Tano North Constituency parliamentary election same as a Technical Advisor at the Office of the Vice President, Dr. Kabiru Mahama, is vying for the Walewale seat.
