Reliable power critical to healthcare – Dr. Apetorgbor

Dr. Elikplim Kwabla Apetorgbor, an energy expert and CEO of the Chamber of Independent Power Producers, Ghana, has highlighted the critical role of uninterrupted power supply in modern healthcare delivery.

Speaking at the inaugural University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) Alumni Lecture, Dr. Apetorgbor emphasized that reliable electricity is essential for the functioning of life-saving medical equipment such as ventilators, incubators, and dialysis machines.

"The devices that sustain lives depend on a constant flow of electricity. Our commitment to ensuring uninterrupted power in healthcare cannot be overstated," Dr. Apetorgbor remarked, stressing the urgency of sustainable energy solutions for healthcare facilities.

He linked his comments to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 3 and 7, which focus on good health and well-being, as well as affordable and sustainable energy.

Dr. Apetorgbor advocated for increased investment in renewable energy sources and proposed that healthcare professionals receive capacity-building in energy management.

He also suggested that universities introduce Power Crisis Management programs aimed at equipping healthcare workers with skills to manage energy-related challenges.

The lecture, held under the theme “Enhancing Healthcare Delivery: The Role of Sustainable Energy and Reliable Technology,” called for collaborative efforts to integrate sustainable energy solutions into healthcare to improve service delivery and save lives.

In her welcome address, UHAS Vice-Chancellor, Professor Lydia Aziato, praised the Alumni Association’s efforts, led by President Mr. Gabriel Agbanyo, for initiating the annual lecture series.

She commended UHAS graduates for their contributions to the healthcare sector worldwide, stating, "I am convinced our alumni will soon be among the shakers and movers of the healthcare sector both locally and globally."

Professor Aziato also stressed the importance of energy and technology in the ongoing evolution of healthcare.

The lecture was chaired by Togbe Dzomatsi II, representing the Agbogbomefia of the Asogli State, Togbe Afede XIV. Togbe Dzomatsi emphasized the need for education and stakeholder collaboration to ensure a sustainable energy future for healthcare and overall human development.
