The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana, has stated that the commission will not exercise discretion in approving presidential candidates for the 2024 elections.
It noted that it will do what the law stipulates.
Chairperson of the commission Mrs Jean Adukwei Mensa said two teams had been instituted; a technical team and an IT team to review and scrutinise the presidential nomination forms by respective candidates whether they conform to the law.
She said during the presentation of nomination forms by candidates at the commission.
She reiterated that what was presented on the forms will be the sole basis for determining whether a candidate meets the requirements outlined in the legal framework
“The teams had been oriented and trained, and they will be fair but firm in scrutinising these forms. They are not to exercise discretion and so what is on the forms is what they need to report to ascertain whether the candidate has fully satisfied the requirements as provided by law,” she stated.
She assured that the team would commence work immediately and feedbacks would be given to the candidates in the shortest possible time.
Candidates that presented their nominations on Thursday 12, included the Ghana Freedom Party, led by Akua Donkor, Janet Nabla, independent candidate and Nana Akosua Frimpomaa Sarpong Kumankumah of the Convention People’s Party (CPP).
