Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has promised that when voted President in the 2024 general election he will significantly reduce electricity bills for Ghanaians.
Speaking at the Church of Pentecost in Teshie on Thursday, September 12, the Vice President announced that he plans to slash the current cost of electricity by 50%.
This he said will be done by moving the country away from primary dependence on oil and gas to using solar power to generate electricity.
"I want Ghana to take a bold decision and move away from primary dependence on oil and gas and depend on solar power to generate electricity.
"God has gifted us energy from the sun, free of charge so we need to harness it. We would increase the power generated through solar by 2000MW and this would reduce electricity bills by 50%," Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia said.
In his bid to reduce the cost of electricity for Ghanaians, the flagbearer of the NPP also aims to set up factories that will manufacture locally.
This he insists will lead to the provision of employment opportunities for Ghanaians.
"Generating this 2000MW would require a lot of solar panels and I don't want us to import solar panels so we will set up factories here in Ghana for the manufacturing of solar panels," Dr. Bawumia said.
The Vice President continues to campaign and hopes to be given the mandate by Ghanaians to serve as president in the December 7 polls.
