President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has ordered the deployment of the Military and the Police to deal with illegal mining (galamsey) across the country.
According to information gathered from sources, the President decided after a national security meeting on Thursday, September 12.
The meeting was called to assess the impact of galamsey on river bodies and the environment.
The President who is not happy with the destruction of forests, lands, and water bodies wants the Military and Police to be deployed immediately to clamp down on galamsey activities with all urgency.
The decision comes after Organised Labour issued a press release warning the President of an impending nationwide strike should the galamsey menace be allowed to go on.
Labour in that release gave the President up to the end of September or face series of industrial action.
Not just Organised Labour but several Civil Society Organisations have come together to demand action from President Akufo-Addo’s government to address galamsey.
There is growing public outcry for all mining activities to be halted and the sector sanitised to protect the country’s forests, lands, and all river bodies.
Many have argued that the President has failed in dealing with illegal mining although he promised to put his presidency on the line to curb the problem.
