Former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwabena Agyapong, has criticized the National Democratic Congress (NDC) over its planned protest against the Electoral Commission (EC).
The NDC's demonstration, scheduled for September 17, has been approved by the Police, according to the party’s General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey.
Speaking to the media at the EC Headquarters after a meeting with the Accra Regional Police Command, Kwetey announced that the demonstration will be held simultaneously in all regions of the country.
He detailed the planned route in Greater Accra, starting from the Kwame Nkrumah Circle and ending at the EC premises.
“We had a very good meeting with the regional police bosses and the agreement is that we are going to proceed with our demonstration on the 17th of this month. And it’s going to happen not just in Greater Accra but in all the other Regions of the country at the same time.
“We wanted to have a confirmation about the endpoint - in terms of the route, we had an agreement that we are going to start from the Kwame Nkrumah Circle, proceed through Farisco Traffic Light through to TUC, continue through the Ministry and come all the way to Parliament and end up in front of the premises of the Electoral Commission,” he said.
Reacting to the NDC’s planned protest on Peace FM's "Kokrokoo" morning show, Kwabena Agyapong stated that the NDC lacks the moral right to criticize the EC, referencing the party's own historical actions and tendencies.
"I don't think they have that moral authority to be saying those things. They say things just for political expediency.
“It doesn't augur well for the government," Agyepong remarked, condemning what he described as the “NDC’s politically motivated stance.”
While Agyepong acknowledged that every citizen has the right to express their views, he emphasized the need for decorum in public discourse.
"Let everyone freely express himself or herself without engaging in a fight nor resorting to insults," he urged.
