Why did Asamoah Gyan jump out of the sinking ship?

Why did Asamoah Gyan jump out of the sinking ship?
LISTEN

Coming events, they say cast their shadows before them some initial effects indicating the nature of an event may be felt before it takes place. This is a timeless adage that encapsulates the idea that future occurrences can be anticipated or predicted by the signs, clues, or effects that precede them.

The upcoming is arguably the most important election in the history of this country, as such, the two major political parties i.e. the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) are leaving no stones unturned in order to win this election. The NPP has included one of Ghana’s most prolific goal scorers into its fold to serve as chairman of Bawumia's Youth and Sports Manifesto sub-committee.

However, on Wednesday morning, Ghanaians woke up to be confronted by the news that, the former Black Stars captain, Asamoah Gyan, has denounced his membership in the New Patriotic Party to focus on humanitarian work.

In a statement posted on his social media handle on X (formerly Twitter), Ghana's record goal scorer said he has not been fair to the country's youth by being affiliated with a political party, and will now be taking a step back from active politics to focus on independently contributing to empowering the youth of Ghana through the Asamoah Gyan Foundation.

Asamoah Gyan is an intelligent personality, he has cleverly and intelligently analysed the political terrain and is convinced that, the NPP ship is gradually sinking, therefore he did exactly what any sensible person will do, jump out of an obvious sinking ship.

According to some chines whispers, his association with the NPP was affecting his business interests, corporate bodies having realised how unpopular the NPP has become, have decided to sever ties with Asamoah Gyan and his foundation, they have decided that, in the interest of their corporate image, they could not sponsor anyone closely associated with this unpopular government.

It has also been alleged that his football talents scouting project has suffered low patronage from the youth who are obviously appalled by his association with the NPP.

Truth be told, if Asamoah Gyan was sure of the NPP’s victory, there is absolutely no way he would have disassociated himself from the party, knowing very well that there is a high propensity of him being the Sports Minister under Dr. Bawumia’s presidency. But he has realised that, his continued association with the party which is definitely headed for opposition will tarnish his image and affect his brand.

Whoever, admonished Asamoah Gyan to make this decision has done him a great favour, it is a great piece of PR which will allow him to maintain the mutual respect between him and the good people of Ghana. The NPP is a living testimony of a disaster, a bubbling crises waiting to burst, it is obvious that this ship has been sinking since 2022, therefore Asamoah Gyan has made the right decision as other high ranking personalities who have ditched the sinking ship.

The likes of Alan John Kyeremanten, Yaw Buaben Asamoah, Boniface Abubakar Sadiq, Kenneth Koranchie, Hopeson Adoryeh, Prof. Frimpong Boateng, Hon. Boakye Agyarko and a host of others have all left the NPP because it is glaring and obvious that the party is headed for a massive defeat.

This is a massive blow to the NPP and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, because just few weeks ago Gyan was spotted at the NPP Presidential Candidate and Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia's campaign launch, and last month, he joined the Vice President in a campaign walk in Akropong in the Eastern Region.

But, in the statement, the 38-year-old Gyan said his actions have not been fair to the Ghanaian youth, and he will no longer be participating in partisan work going forward. Clearly, there is fire on the mountain. Welldone son, great move, smart thinking.
