NDC Voter register: Police approves NDC's September 17 protest
WED, 11 SEP 2024 LISTEN

Ghana Police Service has given the green light to the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) for their planned demonstration against the Electoral Commission (EC) on Tuesday, 17 September 2024.

The party aims to press for a forensic audit of the voter register ahead of the December elections.

The announcement was made by the NDC’s General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, following a meeting between the party's leadership and the Accra Regional Police Command at the EC headquarters.

“We had a very good meeting with the regional police bosses, and the agreement is that we are going to proceed with our demonstration on the 17th of this month," Mr. Kwetey stated.

He further revealed that the demonstration will not be limited to the Greater Accra Region but will also occur simultaneously in all other regions of the country.

The agreed route for the demonstration in Accra will begin at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle, proceed through Farisco Traffic Light to TUC, continue through the Ministry, and culminate in front of the EC premises.

Mr. Kwetey emphasised the significance of the demonstration, stressing that it goes beyond partisan interests.

“The country is heading toward critical elections, and it is in everyone’s interest to ensure that the voters' register is credible and trustworthy,” he said.

He added that the NDC is pressing for a forensic audit of the voter register to ensure transparency.

“If there is nothing to hide, I think there should really be no problem at all. They should open their doors and say come and check… to be certain that everything is okay,” Mr. Kwetey argued.

The National Chairman of the NDC, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, had said that the nationwide demonstration is in response to the EC's refusal to commission a forensic audit of the voter register.

He mentioned that the lack of transparency surrounding the register has raised suspicions, necessitating the protest.
