Professor Opanyin Kofi Agyekum, a senior lecturer at the University of Ghana, has disclosed further details about the destoolment of Sabronum Gyaasehene Nana Awua Gyau Atuomi and two other chiefs over their involvement in illegal mining, known as galamsey, in the Ashanti region.

Speaking on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo morning show, Prof. Agyekum recounted the proceedings at the Manhyia Palace, where Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II took action against the chiefs.

According to him, evidence presented during the session showed that the Sabronum Gyaasehene was not only supporting illegal mining activities but was also actively buying gold from the miners, further fueling the destruction of forests and water bodies.

“The Sabronum Gyaasehene was directly involved in purchasing gold from the galamseyers, and he was even captured on tape instructing them to continue their illegal activities, assuring them of his protection,” Prof. Agyekum revealed.

He explained that the chiefs’ actions were brought to light after residents and the assemblyman of Sabronum petitioned Otumfuo, highlighting the devastating impact of galamsey on their water sources and accusing the local chiefs of complicity.

According to him, the petition read during the proceedings revealed that the Gyaasehene obstructed a task force sent by the District Chief Executive (DCE) to inspect the mining sites for not seeking his permission.

Prof. Agyekum noted that when confronted, the Gyaasehene denied the allegations but was contradicted by a video in which he encouraged the miners to continue their work, boasting of his authority as the Gyaasehene.

During the Asanteman Council meeting on August 26, 2024, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, based on the overwhelming evidence against the chiefs, decided to destool the Sabronum Gyaasehene, Sabronum Akyeamehene and Baamuhene.

Otumfuo also referred the destooled chiefs to the police for prosecution.

The incident has drawn significant public attention, with Prof. Agyekum emphasizing the gravity of the chiefs’ actions, stating, “The destooled chiefs were not just passive enablers; they were actively profiting from the illegal activities that were destroying their communities.”
