Mental health advocate Counsellor Enoch Forson has underscored the need for increased mental health education and advocacy on suicide prevention.

He emphasized that suicide is a global issue, affecting societies across the world—not just in developing countries.

Speaking via phone on GBC Radio Central's Morning Show on Tuesday, September 10, 2024, in recognition of World Suicide Prevention Day, Mr. Forson highlighted that a combination of biological, psychological, and social factors often predispose individuals to suicidal thoughts. He explained that people who feel overwhelmed by life's challenges may view suicide as their only escape.

Citing statistics from the World Health Organization (WHO), Counsellor Forson revealed that nearly 800,000 people die by suicide globally each year. "Every 40 seconds, someone dies by suicide worldwide," he stressed, adding that "almost three people die by suicide every two minutes." He also pointed out that for every suicide, there are 20 unsuccessful attempts, reflecting the widespread nature of the issue. This translates to an estimated 16 million suicide attempts annually.

Mr. Forson urged Ghanaians to understand that suicidal ideation—thinking about or planning suicide—is a call for help. "People with suicidal tendencies are in a state of hopelessness and despair. It’s essential to engage them, offer support, and avoid judgment," he advised.

He further recommended that if initial efforts to support individuals with suicidal thoughts prove insufficient, seeking professional counseling or medical care is critical to providing the help they need.
