Allow The Great Ashanti To Reflect On NDC’s Developments, Not On NPP’s T-shirt

Feature Article Allow The Great Ashanti To Reflect On NDC’s Developments, Not On NPP’s T-shirt
TUE, 10 SEP 2024 LISTEN

One of Ghana's historical tales that captivated me as a young student was that of the Ashanti Kingdom. The people have distinct traditions, customs, and a culture that sets them apart from other Africans. They were strong and militant in the past, amid interesting stories like that of Okomfo Anokye. However, I had no idea that politics could breed prejudice, nepotism, and tribalism, which could have a serious negative impact on the populace for years and impede the development of such a formidable nation.

In Antwerp, I had a conversation with an Ashanti man who openly identified himself as a devoted member of the NPP. He claimed that every member of his home is an avid supporter of the NPP and that he could recall the day that the first individual from the NDC entered his compound; he was bitten by a dog. This is how I realized that the NPP has been so deeply influenced by superstition and psychological issues that they consider it an abomination to vote for the NDC if one is an Ashanti.

The Ashantes have been hindered in their growth for decades by this false and irrational myth. The assertion made by Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the vice presidential candidate for the NPP, that "it's a curse for Ashantes to vote for the NDC" and that "the NPP members in the Ashanti Region don't need development, but giving them mere T-shirts is enough to generate votes for the ruling party" a while back didn't surprise me. How demeaning to the Ashanti nation and the people!

What I want to know is why the Ashantes have been fighting the opposition, the NDC, which has done better than the NPP, a party that has been in power for a long time but cannot boast of any significant projects like hospitals, schools, or markets, or being dependent on and supported a political party that has denied them development for decades? Even though Mahama was only in office for four years, he did better as president than Akufo Addo and Bawumia did in their eight years in office.

As far as I can tell, the NPP would not have failed as a political party because every government or business relies on the skill and judgment of its leaders. This suggests that the party has not selected intelligent and capable leaders to guide it. The same thing applies to the NPP writers, some consider themselves intelligent but they produce absurd and humorous essays, such as "Sagleme” Housing projects are rotting" because Mahama embezzled $100 million.

Assuming that Akufo Addo and Bawumia have not embezzled any funds, they have been in power for nearly eight years and couldn't construct a single hospital; instead, they have demolished a hospital. Amid a public debt of GHC 771 billion, they destroyed government properties to build a foundationless cathedral, making them the worst government in Ghanaian political history. So what’s the significance of accusing Mahama of embezzlement when he has outperformed Akufo Addo and Bawumia?

These are the achievements Mahama has made in the Ashanti Region; which none of the NPP's elected presidents has been able to accomplish them.

I want to use this opportunity to express my gratitude to the Ashanti people, who are now aware of the evils of the NPP regime and are looking to the NDC to carry on its noble job. Had Akufo Addo and Bawumia not taken power in Ghana, no one would have been aware of their incapacity and corruptibility. Vote for change on December 7 in the greatest number possible without fear of intimidation from the army or the police. Put the National Democratic Congress in your ballot.
