The Founding President of IMANI Africa, Franklin Cudjoe has criticised President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo's handling of the fight against illegal small-scale mining, also known as galamsey.

In a Facebook post on Monday, September 9, Mr. Cudjoe questioned the President's understanding of the magnitude of the galamsey problem facing Ghana.

"Frankly, I don’t even understand what is wrong with the President. Look, this is an existential threat,” his post reads in part.

The IMANI boss noted the widespread environmental damage that has occurred due to years of rampant galamsey operations in water bodies and forest reserves across the country.

Rivers and forests that are vital to human lives have been severely destroyed.

However, according to the policy analyst, the nation is yet to see a befitting response from the Akufo-Addo government.

"I even expected the National Security Minister to declare some sort of emergency over all polluted rivers and damaged forests already but he is also asleep, fast asleep more than even the president,” he stated.

Mr. Cudjoe asserted that unless President Akufo-Addo formally declares a national emergency over the galamsey crisis, "nothing will happen" to effectively address the situation.

The conversation surrounding the galamsey menace has heightened following a recent warning by the Ghana Water Company that the country may soon import drinking water due to water pollution.
