In Ghana, a constitutional democracy, a sinister threat looms large. The rights of citizens to privacy and free speech hang in the balance, as powerful individuals exploit their positions to amass wealth at society's expense. My personal ordeal, falsely accused of serial fraud, is a testament to this egregious abuse of power.
The National Bureau of Investigations (NIB) has devolved into a lawless entity, terrorizing citizens and shielding the corrupt. According to a 2022 survey by the Ghana Integrity Initiative, 78% of Ghanaians believe the NIB is politicized, and 65% consider it ineffective in fighting corruption.
Furthermore, data from the Afrobarometer Round 8 survey (2022) reveals that:
- 75% of Ghanaians fear speaking out against corruption, fearing reprisals
- 70% believe the government is doing a poor job in combating corruption
- 60% think the NIB is more focused on protecting the powerful than serving the people
We must act now to protect our democracy. Reforms must ensure the NIB serves the people, not the powerful. Let us stand together against corruption, safeguarding our rights to privacy and free speech. Ghana's future depends on it.
