The Ghana Federation of Labour has lambasted the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) for mismanaging the economy, leading to widespread hardship and suffering among Ghanaians.
According to the Federation, the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia’s policies and decisions have plunged the country into an economic deep hole, causing severe economic hardship and difficulty.
"The NPP's economic mismanagement has led to a significant decline in the standard of living, economic activity, and overall prosperity," said Mr. Abraham Koomson, the federation's Secretary General, in an engagement with the media in Tema on Wednesday.
"The government's policies have caused widespread job losses, high unemployment rates, reduced economic growth, and increased poverty and income inequality," the seasoned unionist stated.
The federation criticized the NPP for its failure to address structural issues, invest in essential services, and implement reforms to drive long-term growth.
"The government's over-reliance on a single industry, mismanagement of resources, and failure to diversify the economy have led to this economic quagmire," Mr. Koomson added.
He called on the government to take immediate action to address the economic crisis, including implementing fiscal discipline, investing in education and healthcare, and promoting good governance and anti-corruption measures.
Mr. Koomson said Ghanaians are struggling to make ends meet as the economic crisis deepens; “many have lost their jobs, businesses are struggling to stay afloat, and the cost of living continues to rise. The government needs to take action now to address this economic crisis."
He said, "The NPP promised to create jobs and improve the economy, but they've failed to deliver. It's time for them to take responsibility and act instead of focussing on breaking the 8-Agenda."
Mr. Koomson stressed that the NPP Election 2024 Flagbearer, Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, as the Vice President, still has months to implement policies to reduce the burden their administration has imposed on Ghanaians over the past eight years.
"The NPP's policies have led to a decline in investor confidence, reduced economic growth, and increased poverty and income inequality," said one economic expert.
"The government needs to implement structural reforms, invest in essential services, and promote good governance and anti-corruption measures to address the economic crisis," Mr. Koomson stated.
He said, "The government's over-reliance on a single industry and failure to diversify the economy have made it vulnerable to external shocks. It's time for the government to take bold action to address the economic challenges facing the country."
“As the economic crisis deepens, Ghanaians are calling for urgent action from the government to address the hardship and suffering,” Mr. Koomson stated.
Mr. Koomson therefore called on Ghanaian workers to vote against the ruling government as “workers have been worse off under the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia administration and must be voted out in the December Polls; it will be a disaster to give them another eight years.”
