Rotimi Onadipe, a prominent cyber security advocate and CEO of Internet Safety Magazine, has urged the public to exercise caution when responding to messages on social media platforms.
Speaking at the 122nd edition of his weekly cyber security awareness broadcast, Onadipe emphasized the importance of staying vigilant to avoid falling victim to online scams.
During the broadcast, held at the Internet Safety Magazine office in Ibadan, Oyo State, Onadipe highlighted the growing threat of online criminals who use social media to deceive unsuspecting users. He advised internet users to avoid responding to messages impulsively, even if they appear to be from trusted sources.
"Today's broadcast comes with a strong warning to all internet users," Onadipe stated. "As you navigate social media, searching for business opportunities and communicating with friends, family, or business partners, it is crucial to remain vigilant to avoid the dangers lurking online."
He further explained that cybercriminals are constantly devising new ways to lure people into their schemes. These messages can come in various forms, such as business proposals, promotions, job offers, financial support, or even fake news.
"Be cautious, regardless of who is contacting you," Onadipe advised. "Don’t rush to respond, even if the message seems to come from someone you know and trust. Criminals can manipulate profile pictures, statuses, and other personal details to create a false sense of security."
Onadipe warned against being swayed by superficial factors like good grammar, professional titles, or enticing promises. "We live in an era where cyber crimes and online scams are rampant, and criminals will use any means necessary to defraud gullible individuals," he said.
He concluded by urging internet users to take their time before responding to any message, to carefully consider its content, and to ask questions when in doubt. "Don't let emotions cloud your judgment, as online criminals can exploit that to take advantage of you," Onadipe cautioned.
