Australia And New Zealand Build Kitchen For Orphanage

A 20 million-cedi kitchen built by the Australia and New Zealand Women Association for the Trotor Orphanage school complex near Suhum in the Eastern Region had been inaugurated.

The Suhum/Kraboa/Coaltar District Chief Executive, Mr Michael Kofi Mensah who inaugurated it, commended the two associations for their support to improve the life styles of the orphans in the school.

He said since it is the policy of the government to provide education at the doorsteps of the people, especially the child, the establishment of the orphanage at Trotor was in the right direction.

Mr Mensah said, if the orphanage had not been established, many of the children at the centre could have become criminals but with the school they have the opportunity to grow to become future leaders. He appealed to the management and the board of the school to ensure that whatever was donated to the school was used for the benefit of the children.

The founder and the proprietor of the school, Rev. Victor Ofori Amoa, said the school was established in 1996 with seven children under a cocoa tree but now, the school has 275 students from all over the country from various ethnic and religious backgrounds. He said out of the number, 105 are orphans, needy and street children.

Mr Amoa said between 2004 and 2006, 120 orphan students presented by the school at the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) the school scored 100 per cent and appealed to the district assembly, NGOs and benevolent organisations to assist the school to build a Home Science Resource Centre.
