IMANI Africa Vice President Kofi Bentil has stated that Ghana has sufficient funds to provide free education for all youth in the country only if certain impediments are removed.

According to him, if corruption and wastage of public funds can be curtailed, Ghana would have adequate finances for universal free education.

The policy advisor suggested transferring funds directly to individual students or their families rather than through schools.

“Ghana has enough money to provide free education for all our youth on 2 conditions:

1. Let the money follow the child, let the child pay the school! don’t send money to the school!

2. Stop the stealing and waste.
It is absolutely possible,” reads his post.

This follows a campaign promise by the National Democratic Congress flagbearer John Dramani Mahama to waive fees for level 100 public tertiary students.

The policy, dubbed, ‘No Fees Stress’, was first announced at the launch of the NDC youth manifesto held at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) on Monday, August 12.

However, the feasibility of fully funding free education has been questioned given Ghana's financial constraints with others asking how the students can pay their fees after the first year..
