Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has proposed extending the period for renewing driver's licenses in Ghana from the current two years to either eight or ten years.
The move, according to the vice president, is aimed at easing the burden on motorists who are currently required to renew their licenses every two years.
Speaking at an event in Boadua in the Akwatia Constituency of the Eastern Region over the weekend, Dr. Bawumia said the current two-year renewal period for driver's licenses "does not make sense".
"Drivers are here. Today, the driver's license expires every two years. Let us extend it, be it 8 years or 10 years. Let us make sure you can have a driver's license without having to renew it every year," Dr. Bawumia said.
Unlike Ghanaian passports which are currently renewed every ten years, driver's licenses in Ghana must be renewed or validated every two years according to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA).
As a result of the short two-year renewal period, motorists have to endure long queues at DVLA offices and often face harassment from DVLA officials and police for non-renewed licenses.
Dr. Bawumia's proposal aims to relieve this burden on drivers by extending the renewal period to eight or ten years.
