The ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) is aiming to seize nine parliamentary seats currently held by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Greater Accra Region in the upcoming 2024 general elections.

According to Divine Agorhum, the Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the NPP, the party has identified nine constituencies in the region that they believe are ripe for grabs based on ongoing efforts ahead of Election 2024.

“Currently, we are looking at some nine constituencies that, you know, if we are able to work hard, we should be able to snatch from the NDC,” Mr. Agorhum told Asaase News in an interview.

The regional chairman acknowledged that Greater Accra has traditionally been a challenging terrain for the NPP due to its cosmopolitan nature.

However, he stated that the party’s presidential target for the region is to obtain 56% of the popular vote.

Mr. Agorhum further gave insights into some mistakes made in the 2020 elections that contributed to the NPP losing seats like Okaikoi North.

He noted: “We shouldn’t have lost Okaikoi North if we had not declared the election day a holiday. You know most of those traders at the Abeka Lapaz stretch; they are all our people.

“On the holiday, they did not come to work because they registered to vote around the area, so no work means they are not coming and that affected us also in Ablekuma Central, Tema East and some other constituencies.”

The regional chairman expressed confidence that through tightened strategies and hard work on the ground, the NPP will increase its current 14 seats by snatching some from the NDC, who currently have 20 seats in Greater Accra.

“At the end of the exercise, NPP will beat NDC here in the Greater Accra region- that I am sure of,” Mr. Agorhum boldly declared.
