Former United States President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama have endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris's selection of Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate.
In their statement issued on Tuesday, August 6, the former First Couple described Walz as an "ideal partner" for the 2024 Democratic Party’s presumptive presidential nominee.
"When a presidential candidate chooses a running mate, it says a lot about who they are and what kind of president they'll be," Obama and Michelle Obama said.
The Obamas argued that Walz possesses both "the judgment to make tough decisions, and the character to believe that every voice counts and everyone deserves an equal chance."
As a sitting governor with experience from being a former teacher, army officer and several others, Walz has "the experience to be vice president," stressed the Obamas.
In a social media post making the announcement, Harris wrote "I am proud to announce that I've asked Tim Walz to be my running mate. As a governor, a coach, a teacher, and a veteran, he's delivered for working families like his. It's great to have him on the team. Now let’s get to work."
Governor Walz responded to the announcement via a post, saying "It is the honor of a lifetime to join Kamala Harris in this campaign. I’m all in.
“Vice President Harris is showing us the politics of what’s possible. It reminds me a bit of the first day of school. So, let’s get this done, folks! Join us.”
