Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama has revealed his plan to make Ghana food-secured when voted President after the 2024 general election.
Speaking during his campaign tour of the Upper East Region, the former president said the policies of his government will aim to boost the agricultural sector and enhance food security across the country.
“First, we will establish special agro-industrial zones in all sixteen regions, focusing on adding value to local crops they have a comparative advantage in producing. This will boost exports and reduce our reliance on raw material imports, ultimately strengthening our economy.
“Secondly, we will set up nationwide farmer service centres to provide farmers with the technology, equipment, inputs, and opportunities to improve food security and drive economic growth. By promoting advanced farming techniques and digital tools and the formation of strong farmer cooperatives, we aim to empower our agricultural community and inspire a culture of success and innovation,” John Dramani Mahama said.
He continued, “Finally, we will launch a programme inspired by the successful "Operation Feed Yourself and Industries" initiative of the early 1970s. This programme will focus on making Ghana self-sufficient in basic staples, significantly reducing unnecessary imports, and ensuring that our people have access to affordable and nutritious food, thereby securing our food supply.”
In his address, John Dramani Mahama said as President, he would collaborate with Chiefs and the Ghanaian people to build a more prosperous and food-secure future for Ghana.
He said all he needs is for the Ghanaian electorates to trust and vote for him to become president again on December 7.
He assured that once elected president, his administration will work towards a thriving agricultural sector that benefits farmers and consumers.
