Former President, John Dramani Mahama has stated that the assertion that the conflict in Bawku is a conflict between ethnic groups is false.

According to him, the age-old conflict is fueled by people who fund the crisis and have politics behind it.

Speaking as part of his campaign tour of the Upper East Region, John Dramani Mahama said this is why although the chiefs and people of Bawku want peace, it has eluded them for years.

“Anytime NDC is in government Bawku is at peace. Unfortunately, as soon as NDC leaves government the Bawku crisis flairs up again. Let nobody say it’s a fight between ethnic groups. There is politics behind it and there are people who deliberately fund that crisis. The majority of people in Bawku wants peace because everybody wants peace to do his business,” John Dramani Mahama said.

In his address to the Chiefs and people of Bawku, John Dramani Mahama assured that when voted president in the 2024 general election, his administration will take steps to bring lasting peace to the community and its environs.

“Peace is our priority. When the NDC comes, we are going to prioritise Bawku’s peace so that peace will return to Bawku and people can go about their business and look after their families,” the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress said.
