President of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has emphatically stated that he rejects the notion that the country was founder by Kwame Nkrumah alone.

The President made the pronouncement on Saturday, August 3, in a Founders Day address to the nation.

Founders Day, an annual day set aside to honour those who fought for the independence of Ghana will be commemorated on Sunday, August 4, and observed as a holiday on Monday, August 5.

In his address, President Akufo-Addo said it is important for the country to recognise that many people and groups fought and played key roles for the independence of Ghana.

“I speak to you this evening, rejecting completely the notion that Ghana was founded by one man. Whiles Kwame Nkrumah’s contributions to our independence are undeniable and unassailable, it is important to acknowledge for our self-respect that the struggle for our nation’s freedom was a collective effort spanning several generations,” President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo said.

The President, however, acknowledged that Kwame Nkrumah indeed played a major role in the final lap of Ghana’s road to independence.

He said this is why “Despite the several unfortunate things that happened after independence under his watch, Parliament in 2019 decided to memorialise his date of birth as Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day, the only Ghanaian so far to be so honoured in our history.”
