Mr. Prince Aboagye, special assistant to Hon. Yaw Osafo-Maafo has stressed that if his boss is given the mandate as flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the 2008 general elections, he will work hard to win more votes in the Volta Region.

According to him, Hon Osafo-Maafo's recent visit to the "World Bank" of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) attracted massive support and rousing welcome, which indicated that he had won the hearts of the people in the region.

"I did not anticipate such a large crowd in the Volta Region."
Mr. Aboagye said these in a telephone interview on Melody FM, a local radio station in Takoradi, during its morning programme, last Tuesday.

He said the visit took the former Finance Minister to Sogakope, Nkwanta, Hohoe and Ho, where he interacted with the constituents and party executives, who were poised to vote for him during the congress to elect a presidential candidate.

He said the trend in the Danquah-Busia tradition had been that only two potential candidates emerged though several potential presidential candidates always filed their nomination.
He cited the 1996 NPP delegates' congress, when the mantle fell on the then candidate, John Kufuor and the late Prof. Albert Adu-Boahen.

The pattern followed in 2000, when many people expressed their desire to contest and later, the battle was between Mr. John Kufuor and Hon. Nana Akuffo Addo, adding, "In 2008, the flagbearership will be between Hon. Osafo-Maafo and one other potential candidate.
