Sir Keir Starmer, PM of the UK last week took the whip away from seven of his backbenchers for six months. German democracy has installed the tool of "Fraktionsdisziplin" (discipline to vote for the party leadership decision) and when MPs fail to feel the consequences at the next election or are expelled from the party group in parliament.
The term "Dictatorship" means to force political will on others followed by severe consequences. Dictatorship comes in the form of individuals or a close elite group as seen e.g. in Communist states.
Democracy is about the expression of the people's will and organization to make the voices to be heard and effective. By this, a broad spectrum of views comes into play. MPs are entrusted to stand in for their voters.
Political parties argue that party politics in parliament can only work when all MPs vote for the party line. On certain occasions, party elders allow a free vote with no party discipline or potential punishment. These are highly ethical bills not connected to political power or gains.
The e.g. German constitution determines any MP only has to submit himself to his consciousness, not the will of the electorate, his party, or pressure groups. In parliamentary practice, all political parties in Germany violate the Constitution on this aspect, and nobody cares even not the new extreme parties from left to right. MPs as the representation of the will of the voters fall in line to be seen as voting machines to please the party elite, not the people of their constituency. The pain of dictatorship in this aspect is like a thorn of a bleeding dark red rose.
Political parties justify this practice by pointing out that every four or five years the electorate can demonstrate their displeasure or agreement at the polling station. They sideline the arguments that an MP might only seek one term as MP, defect to another party, find arguments to manipulate the voters, and that many laws and decisions to reverse and change take time and are very costly (Brexit reverse, Atomic Power supply to end, etc).
The influence of political parties outweighs the independent minds of voters. Powerful individuals standing for the top job in society and not common candidates are through their charismatic postures a pull factor to rally voters and MPs behind them with no punishment needed. Sir Keir Starmer and others lack this visionary charisma and use elements to dictate their will on free and fair elected voices of the nation the MPs. The principles and advantages of democracy become questionable in more than one aspect.
Elected Kingdoms with modern-day elements of the ancient Greek governmental system to ensure checks and balances, serve the nation well, and avoid misuse of power, being a constant reliable part of the society with a familiar face for more than eight years will not inherit this failed democracy element.
