Ghanaian socialite and actress Efia Odo has voiced her concerns regarding recent pronouncements by Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) Flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
Dr. Bawumia announced plans to introduce a national individualised credit scoring system, which he said will enable Ghanaians to purchase goods, including mobile phones, on credit and pay in instalments based on their credit score.
"We are bringing the credit scoring system so that our people can get good credit for goods so that they can pay small, small, small," Dr. Bawumia explained.
Efia Odo, however, criticised the initiative, arguing that such systems have led to significant debt in countries where they are currently implemented.
She believes that what Ghanaians truly need are well-paying jobs and the stabilisation of the cedi, rather than a credit scoring system to buy basic commodities.
In a social media post shared on X, she questioned the necessity of the proposal, stating, "Do you know how many Americans are in debt because of credit cards? Ghanaians don't need this. What we need are jobs, well-paying jobs!! We need the cedi to STABILIZE.
“We need to keep our doctors and nurses home instead of everyone leaving because of low or unpaid wages."
Efia Odo further highlighted the disparity in earnings between doctors in Ghana and those abroad, noting that “a doctor in America can make anywhere from $100,000 to $500,000 a year, whereas Ghanaian doctors earn significantly less.
"Nowhere close to those figures!! This credit card system is not a necessity!!!" she added.
