North Tongu Member of Parliament Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has petitioned the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) to investigate a $34.9 million government contract for ambulance spare parts.
In a post on X on Monday, July 22, Mr Ablakwa alleges the deal between the government and Service Ghana Auto Group Limited "reeks of corruption and is against public interest."
The contract, approved in February 2024, is for spare parts for 307 ambulances imported in 2019 for $54 million.
"It is unacceptable that after 24-hours since my exposé, government has been unable to speak, and at least provide a breakdown of the US$113,695.45 it claims to be spending on spare parts for each ambulance when that amount can get us a new fully-equipped modern ambulance," Ablakwa said in his statement on social media on July 23.
He revealed that the $34.9 million contract amounts to over $113,000 per ambulance for spare parts, which he says is "more than the value of a new fully equipped Mercedes Benz ambulance."
The petition calls on the OSP to investigate this "sordid affair" that could be "recklessly and criminally causing real financial loss to the state."
It also cites a previous Auditor General's report which found Service Ghana Auto Group inflated invoices in previous deals.
Ablakwa said "This latest Akufo-Addo/Bawumia/Ofori-Atta ‘create, loot and share’ scheme shall also be defeated with the power of the people!"
