Students of the Commonwealth Hall of the University of Ghana are calling for the resignation of the Accra Regional Police Commander, DCOP Douglas Akrofi-Asiedu.

Speaking at a news conference in Accra, the leader of the students, Mr. Evans Owusu Amankwah, said the police misrepresented facts about what really transpired during a clash between a group of students and the police over the weekend.

He called on the Minister of the Interior to institute an investigation into the incident.

Mr Amankwah said they have evidence to show that students were beaten and brutalized by the Police without any provocation. According to him, the subsequent denial by DCOP Akrofi-Asiedu is a strong reason why he must resign.

The Accra police chief has denied that his men brutalized the students.

However, Mr Amankwah exhibited a live bullet shell, a blood-stained T-Shirt and some injured students as proof of the alleged police brutality. According to him, some of the students were beaten during a peaceful procession in Accra, while others received their beating after being arrested by the police.

One of the students displayed an X-ray image, showing a broken index finger while another had his head stitched from cuts he sustained from the alleged beating. Some of the students said they were taken to hospital for treatment by the Police, after they were beaten.

Mr Amankwah said the confrontation began when one student passed a funny comment which one Policeman mistook for an insult. He said when a Police reinforcement came after an apparent report, the officers started firing live bullets and brutally assaulted them too.
