Personal observations on recent engagement by the Petroleum Hub Development Corporation

Dear Editor,
Please find below observations of a local on the just-ended Community Engagement by the Petroleum Hub Development Corporation officials and nananom of Western Nzema Traditional Authority.

Concerns Regarding Compulsory Land Acquisition

I, a discerning Nzema, am writing to express my concerns regarding the compulsory land acquisition process being undertaken by the Petroleum Hub Cooperation, led by CEO and Awualae Annor Agyie III, ( Board Chairman)

Lack of Clarity and Transparency
I am alarmed by the lack of clarity and transparency in the process, particularly with regard to the dissemination of the SEA report and the naming of the Hub. The CEO's assertion that the Hub cannot be named after Nzema or Jomoro is perplexing, and I demand clarification on this matter, just that there were no other opportunities for further questions.

Compulsory Acquisition of Land
I am concerned about the compulsory acquisition of land for a private-led investment project, which violates human rights and the 1992 Constitution of Ghana, Section 20(1)(a).

We urge further explanations, prompt dissemination of the report and transparency regarding the naming of the Hub.

Alternative Livelihoods
I question the CEO's assertion that generational compensation can be replaced with alternative livelihoods, such as piggery and fish ponds.

Is it fair to handle landowners in this manner?

How can the CEO justify replacing the ancestral farmers, which make Nzemas known as rich men and women, with piggery and fish ponds?

Demand for Answer
We demand answers to these questions and urge the CEO to prioritize the interests of the affected communities. We will continue to hold our leaders accountable for their actions and ensure our voices are heard, and the right thing is done to benefit our people.

Conclusion
As a key interested and affected community member and landowner, I was not satisfied with the CEO's answers during the meeting. I concluded that their interest is in land takeovers and nothing else. The meeting was organized for the affirmation of the Hub, and since all action has been taken to sanction Section 20(1)(a) - Compulsory Acquisition of Land, we demand that the CEO prioritizes the interests of the affected communities.
