Promoting the development of local languages is important for several reasons:

Preserving cultural heritage: Local languages are often closely tied to a community's history, traditions, and values. By promoting the development of these languages, we can help preserve and pass on important aspects of our cultural heritage to future generations.

Fostering national unity: Language is a powerful tool for communication and connection. By promoting local languages, we can help foster a sense of unity and belonging among different communities within the country.

Enhancing communication and understanding: When people are able to communicate in their own language, they are more likely to express themselves effectively and understand others. This can lead to better relationships, cooperation, and mutual understanding within a society.

Promoting diversity and inclusivity: Every language is unique and carries with it a wealth of knowledge, perspectives, and ways of thinking. By promoting local languages, we can celebrate and embrace the diversity of our society, ensuring that all voices are heard and valued.

Supporting education and literacy: Research has shown that children learn best in their mother tongue, and by promoting the development of local languages, we can improve educational outcomes, increase literacy rates, and empower individuals to reach their full potential.

For these reasons, promoting the development of local languages is essential for building strong, vibrant, and inclusive communities that value and celebrate their linguistic diversity.

And it is against this background that the 2024 presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress, H.E. John Dramani Mahama has promised to promote the development of Ghanaian languages, if elected as the next president of Ghana.

He believes that promoting Ghanaian languages is crucial for preserving the country's cultural heritage and fostering national unity.

Mahama also plans to allocate more resources to the Bureau of Ghana Languages to support research, education, and advocacy efforts for Ghanaian languages.

Additionally, he aims to collaborate with language experts, educators, and community leaders to develop strategies for integrating Ghanaian languages into various aspects of society, including education, media, and government.

Mahama is committed to ensuring that Ghanaian languages are given the recognition and support they deserve to thrive and flourish in the country.
