Jean Mensa, the Chairperson of Ghana's Electoral Commission (EC), has reiterated that the Commission does not have the ability to change or alter the results of the upcoming 2024 general elections.
Addressing Members of Parliament on Friday, July 19, Mensa said the EC receives documentation on election results from polling station level and compiles the tallies.
“I would like to assure you that there is absolutely no way that at the helm of affairs the commission can change anything because the documentation comes from the ground and we believe that you have copies," she stated.
The EC chair was responding to concerns from some opposition MPs about the possibility of result manipulation.
However, Mensa stressed that the EC's role is simply to compile results based on documented figures from polling stations across the country where parties have their representatives.
"This is message that we are sending and we continue to send to officers on the ground but thankfully you have your agents there so with the right training, they should be able to scrutinize some of these things and ensure that there is integrity at every level of the processes," she stressed.
The election management body’s boss urged MPs to educate their party agents at polling stations to closely monitor counting and collation of results to ensure transparency.
“We would like to call on you to do a thorough education of your agents to ensure that they scrutinize and ensure integrity all across the chain...there’s nothing more than we can declare than what comes to us,” the EC chair told the legislators.
Her comments are aimed at building public confidence in the EC's integrity ahead of the pivotal December 7 elections.
