IMANI Africa has invited the two largest political parties in Ghana, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and National Democratic Congress (NDC), to participate in a national election debate as the country prepares for general elections on December 7.
In formal invitation letters dated June 27, addressed to Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia—flagbearer of the NPP and former President John Dramani Mahama—flagbearer of the NDC, IMANI Founding President Franklin Cudjoe outlined the importance of the debates for enhancing democratic discourse and accountability in Ghana.
"We believe your participation will be beneficial for...encouraging peaceful and constructive political dialogue. The debate will further foster a respectful exchange of ideas, setting a tone of civility and cooperation that is essential for a healthy democratic environment," wrote Mr. Cudjoe in both letters.
The debates hope to "provide a critical platform for the major political parties in Ghana to present their policies and vision to the electorate," specifically addressing pressing issues like the economy, social services, infrastructure, energy and governance.
In a Facebook post on July 18th, Cudjoe revealed they had received a tentative response from Mahama's office but are still awaiting a response from Bawumia and the NPP.
"We have invited the leadership of the two leading political parties for a debate. The Flagbearers, General Secretaries and Chairmen. We have had a reply from John Dramani Mahama's office - tentative though, and we wait. Yet to hear from Dr Bawumia and his team," wrote the policy advisor.
The IMANI says the debates aim to set the tone for a substantive discussion of the key issues in a manner that promotes civility, transparency and accountability - crucial ingredients for Ghana's democratic stability as it approaches another pivotal election.
Participation from the NPP and NDC could offer Ghanaians insight into the competing visions and help reduce political tensions, says the think tank.

Cobra like you do you think Bawumia or Ghanaians will fall for this stupid equalisation trick? Mahama refused IEA invitation so if Bawumia don't fall for this trap then hurray it's equal. Shameless Imani's Franklin Cudjoe.
