Presidential debate: Bawumia just wants to share stage with Mahama to refuel his failing campaign — Prof Kpessa-Whyte

Professor Michael Kpessa-Whyte, a leading member of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), has criticized NPP flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s quest for a debate ahead of the December 7 elections.

The University of Ghana lecturer says the Vice President’s motivation is not to discuss policies but rather to capitalize on Mr. Mahama’s popularity.

“Bawumia's aim in calling for a debate with John Mahama is not about policy interactions or showcasing their respective records; in fact, it is all about an opportunity for him to share the stage with John Mahama in the hopes that it will refuel his failing campaign,” Prof Kpessa Whyte wrote in a post on X on Wednesday, July 17.

The ruling party’s flagbearer has been accusing Mr. Mahama of avoiding a debate for fear that his policies would be exposed.

However, NDC party members say the Vice President should instead focus on addressing the country's struggling economy.

Meanwhile, the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) has called on all presidential candidates contesting in the 2024 general elections to participate in its upcoming debate on their policy proposals.

In a July 17 press statement, the IEA said the debate will provide candidates an opportunity to directly present and discuss their various plans and programs with the electorate.

"The Debates will provide a common platform for the Presidential Candidates and Vice-Presidential Candidates to discuss various aspects of the nation's development process," the statement said in part.
