In a significant shift, some traders in the Kumasi Metropolis of the Ashanti Region have declared their intention to ditch the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and vote for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2024 polls.

This decision comes after they felt that the NDC has managed the affairs of traders better than the NPP, despite the region being a stronghold of the ruling party.

According to the traders, the NDC has consistently prioritized their welfare by providing them with befitting infrastructure for their trading activities.

They noted that this trait of the NDC is in sharp contrast with the NPP, who have consistently failed to support traders.

Addressing the media at a press conference on Monday, some traders at the Kumasi Racecourse Market said that the NDC has proven to be a better partner for them compared to the NPP.

Christabel Amoah, a leading member of the group, highlighted the NDC's better record in supporting traders, citing the construction of markets such as Kejetia, Asawase, and Tafo under former President John Dramani Mahama's leadership.

She noted that these infrastructures have helped thousands of traders in the region to make ends meet.

In contrast, she pointed out that the NPP's market projects, including the Krofrom Market and the second phase of the Kejetia redevelopment project, have stalled for over 15 years and two years, respectively.

This, she added, proves that the NPP has no regard for traders in their own backyard.
