Dr. Clement Abass Apaak, Member of Parliament for Builsa South on the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) ticket, has waded into the conversations regarding a presidential debate ahead of the December 7 general elections.
The ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has been calling on the opposition NDC flagbearer John Mahama for a debate.
Vice President Bawumia says he needs an opportunity to debate the former president on economic records. He further vows to expose flaws in Mr. Mahama's campaign policies.
However, Dr. Apaak, who is the Ranking Member on Parliament’s Education Committee, has kicked against any debate.
According to him, there is no need for Mr. Mahama to debate Dr. Bawumia, whom he describes as a "pathological liar".
In a social media post on Monday, July 15, Dr. Apaak noted that he would stage a protest if the NDC flagbearer agree to participate in the debate.
"The certified pathological liar had the impudence to call JDM an 'empty barrel' because of a debate? If you say he is empty, why are you crying because he will not debate you?
“If JDM agrees to debate DMB, I will organise a protest. Why would anyone debate a liar?" his post read.
Meanwhile, the Institute for Economic Affairs (IEA) says it will soon announce a date for the presidential debate, stressing that it is essential for voters to assess both presidential and vice-presidential candidates to enable informed decision-making.
