One of the hallmarks of the Akufo-Addo presidency, which will become part of its enduring legacy, is its obsession with the perversion of Ghanaian history as it relates to the struggle for independence and Kwame Nkrumah’s legacy. Right from the beginning of the regime, a great deal of political capital was invested in a foolhardy attempt to diminish the legacy of the founder of this once great nation, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.
Nkrumah is a global icon. He was named as the African of the millennium at the end of the last century. Every nation has an icon, who is in no way perfect but embodies, the best version of the people . Nkrumah represents in the minds of Ghanaians now, selflessness, patriotism, and exceptionally visionary and incorruptible leadership, that left an infrastructure that has continued to support this country decades after his demise.
The disgraceful spectacle of the new vice presidential nominee of the NPP attempting in someway to compare the eight years of economic decline and hardship visited upon Ghanaians by Nana Akufo-Addo’s administration, to the exceptional leadership that Nkrumah provided to Ghana and Africa, is outside the bounds of reality.
To put it simply, historians will record that this NPP administration represents one of the worst periods of governance in Ghana, typified by an erosion in human rights, diminished press, freedom, crony capitalism, nepotism, and arrogance and impunity of public officials with complete disrespect of citizens and traditional institutions. Let’s not mention unbridled corruption.
Neither Dr. Opoku Prempeh, Dr. Bawumia nor the outgoing president are fit to tie Kwame Nkrumah’s shoelaces or even polish his shoes. Unfortunately, these utterances say more about the person than the subject matter.
We of the Progressive Alliance for Ghana (PAG) a neo-Nkrumaist party, contesting the 2024 elections, want to make it clear that these falsehoods will have no impact on how Ghanaians cherish the memory of their founding president. It will only remind Ghanaians of how much they miss him.
