The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has rejected claims that its flagbearer John Dramani Mahama recently travelled to Russia to solicit funds for his campaign ahead of the 2024 elections.
Reports emerged in some pro-government media outlets alleging that Mr. Mahama's visit to Moscow was to secure "financial and technical support" for the 2024 polls.
But in a statement issued on Friday, July 12, spokesperson for Mr. Mahama’s campaign Joyce Bawah Mogtari described the reports as "deliberately concocted stories" aimed at tarnishing Mr. Mahama and the NDC.
"We condemn the disgraceful & shadowy journalism by Asaase Radio & Daily Guide. Over the last almost eight years, the government of Nana Akufo-Addo has relied on misinformation and disinformation as tools to whitewash the corrupt, deplorable, disrespectful, incompetent and maladministration that has pushed many Ghanaians into hardship and difficulty in making ends meet,” reads the statement in part.
According to Mrs Bawah Mogtari, Mr. Mahama was in Moscow for an entirely different purpose.
She stated, "Mr Mahama was in Moscow to launch the Russian language translation of his widely acclaimed memoir, My First Coup D'etat and Other Stories from the Lost Decades of Africa, at the Russian Academy of Sciences."
The NDC spokesperson further reported that Ghana's Ambassador to Russia H.E Dr Oheneba Akyaa Opoku Ware, was even present at the event asking if the diplomat and her entourage "Were there to support Mahama's request for campaign funding?"
She urged Ghanaians to disregard the "lies", stressing the NDC remains focused on engaging citizens on Mr. Mahama's vision to "catalyse the reset of our country towards building the Ghana we want together."
