The media landscape needs reforms to ensure accuracy over hastily reported information, according to Ebenezer Twum Asante, Senior Vice President of Markets at telecommunications giant MTN Group.
Speaking at the launch of the book "Truth Over Speed" in Accra, Asante said "If we are truly committed to our democracy, it is long overdue to clean up the space.
The commitment, he said, will “promote policies that cultivate scalable, strong, and reputable media organizations capable of producing quality work, while also adequately recognizing and attracting talented media professionals."
Mr. Twum Asante highlighted the importance of quality journalism in the current information environment where misleading claims spread rapidly.
“Quality journalism not only holds those in power accountable but also ensures that the media remains accountable," he stated.
It additionally gives voice to marginalized groups and allows citizens to make informed decisions by receiving relevant facts, Mr. Twum Asante stressed.
The book "Truth Over Speed," written by media consultant Nana Kwasi Gyan-Apenteng, examines the tension between getting information out quickly and verifying accuracy.
