Mahama’s ‘My First Coup D’etat and Other Stories from the Lost Decades of Africa,’ translated in Russian language

The Russian translation of former President and NDC flagbearer John Dramani Mahama's memoir titled ‘My First Coup d'état and Other Stories from the Lost Decades of Africa’ has been launched at the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow.

The memoir gives insights into Mr. Mahama's youth in Ghana and captures Africa's socio-political landscape from the 1970s to the 1990s, a vast period on the continent.

Writing about the Russian translation on Thursday, July 11, Mahama said "This book encompasses tales of my youth in Ghana and the shifting sands of Africa’s socio-political landscape from the 1970s through the 1990s.

“It is an honour to see it now accessible in Russian, adding to the Portuguese version and, of course, the original English published in 2012,” added the post.

One chapter that the opposition leader believes will resonate strongly with Russian readers recounts his time as a student at the Institute of Social Sciences in Moscow.

On this, he notes: "One chapter I believe will resonate deeply with the Russian audience recounts my time as a student at the Institute of Social Sciences in Moscow. The era of Gorbachev and Perestroika was a time of significant change, and I was fortunate to engage in thought-provoking discussions on socialism with my inspirational philosophy lecturer, Mr. Gudoshnik."

He expressed gratitude to the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Russia-Ghana Parliamentary Friendship Association and others involved in the translation project.

Mr. Mahama hopes the book will give Russian audiences and others a window into Africa's soul and history, presented in an engaging journalistic style.
