The Convention People's Party (CPP) has condemned remarks by New Patriotic Party (NPP) vice presidential candidate Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, known popularly as Napo, comparing President Akufo-Addo to Ghana's founding father Kwame Nkrumah.
In a statement dated July 10, the CPP demanded Napo’s resignation from all governmental and political positions within 24 hours for his "reprehensible" comments touting Akufo-Addo as a better leader than Nkrumah.
Napo made the comparison while speaking at his unveiling as NPP running mate at the Jubilee Park in Kumasi on Tuesday.
He said "no other president has helped Ghana like Akufo-Addo" and that "If you take your Kwame Nkrumah, no one has become president who has protected Ghana and moved it forward like Akufo-Addo."
In its release, the CPP said "a questioning or comparison of the contribution of Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah to Ghana, Africa, and Humanity as a whole, is a moot question, dead on arrival, outmoded at birth."
The statement signed by its chairperson, Patrick Nelson Sogbodjor added "The statement is so reprehensible and unbecoming of his stature that it is abhorrent to refer to it, or even publish it anywhere."
The CPP further noted Napo's comments disregard Nkrumah's legacy, whose "achievements include the same Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, where Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh studied medicine."
It warned of protests if Napo fails to resign or is dismissed from his positions by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
