A group of concerned members of the Convention People's Party (CPP), calling themselves the Concerned Comrades, has spoken out against the formation of an Independent Committee (IC) to oversee the party's national congress and flag bearer election for the 2024 general elections.
According to them, the IC is unconstitutional because it did not receive approval from the Central Committee, as required by Article 73(c) of the party's constitution.
At a press conference, Convener Afelik A. Agoba explained that the Central Committee, comprising regional chairmen, constituency chairmen, the national chairman, former national chairmen, and former flag bearers, did not sanction the IC's formation. He argued that a meeting between the Founding Members, Central Committee members, and the National Chairperson on May 14, 2024, where the decision to establish the IC was made, did not consult the Central Committee.
The Concerned Comrades urged the National Chairperson, Council of Elders, and Founders to convene an emergency Central Committee meeting to address the issue. They proposed guidelines for the meeting, including the establishment of a truly independent committee comprising competent and ideologically grounded comrades to reorganize the party. They emphasized the need for the party to be organized in accordance with its constitution, from the polling stations to the national level, to avoid further internal conflicts.
The group cautioned that disregarding the constitution's guidelines could exacerbate the party's existing cracks and lead to future problems.
