Senior Political Science lecturer at the University of Ghana, Legon, Prof. Ransford Gyampo has urged the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) to allow flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to choose his preferred choice of running mate.

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia was elected flagbearer of the NPP in 2023 in a contest that created a lot of controversies and saw the party losing one of its leading members, Alan Kyerematen.

Eight months on, the elected Vice President is yet to name his running mate to partner with him in the 2024 presidential election.

Amid what has been described as a delay, there have been allegations that there is pressure to impose a running mate on Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Sharing his view on the matter, Prof. Ransford Gyampo has urged the NPP to allow the flagbearer to choose his flagbearer just as President Akufo-Addo was given the freedom to choose his running mate himself.

“It doesn’t matter whose name gets mentioned. The most important thing is DMB must be allowed to choose his running mate, just as NADAA was allowed to do same. The party must not impose anyone on him. He has a mind of his own,” Prof. Ransford Gyampo said.

While the country awaits the naming of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia's flagbearer, several reports have asserted that Energy Minister Mathew Opoku Prempeh has been selected.
