LISTEN

A two-time Governorship aspirant in Edo State, High Chief Jacob Egietseme Idinye has felicitated the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Alhaji Bashir Adewale Adeniyi (MFR) on the occasion of his "transformative and meritorious" one year in office, describing his appointment as well deserved.

High Chief Idinye a recipient of over 32 different professional awards locally and internationally in Maritime Reporting and Customs activities in a congratulatory message he made available to newsmen on Wednesday, described the Customs boss as a thorough-bred professional who has the exceptional skills, knowledge, experience and expertise in leading the Service to greater heights, maintaining that Nigeria is yet to see the best in him.

Idinye remarked, “I find it necessary to join the officers and the rank and file of the Nigeria Customs Service, your family, friends, associates, mentees and protégés to congratulate you on your transformative and meritorious one year anniversary in office as the Comptroller-General of Nigeria Customs Service, particularly on your positive contributions which have inspired numerous positive change. You are worthy of honor and deserve the greatest celebrations.

"The Comptroller-General’s numerous milestones are quite commendable and they are reflections of a stronger commitment and patriotism to rid Nigeria of economic sabotage and other related nefarious activities. I have said it before, Mr. Wale Adeniyi’s appointment by President Bola Tinubu was a round peg in a round hole.

"His strategies in implementing the National Single Window championed by the Federal Ministry of Finance is also commendable as well as strategies in harmonising and standardizing Customs processes, port decongestion, collaboration with other agencies for efficiency and competitiveness, anti-smuggling operations, integrating ICT into operations, investing in capacity building, and stakeholders' engagements especially with host communities and border towns where smuggling often take place all these have helped to reduce crimes and bringing the vista of peace among others.

"His emphasis in supporting local production and taking food security seriously granting waivers to vehicle owners to pay duties within a specific time to avoid sanctions and to regularise the importation of vehicles through payment of duties are timely innovations that are currently yielding positive results for the service and the nation as a whole."

He continued, "He also helped in stemming the tide of importation of illicit drugs through Nigerian ports by signing of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Customs administration of countries like China, India, Turkey among others, it takes a visionary leader to think in this direction in attaining indelible feats."

Foreseeing a notable improvement in the Nigerian maritime sub-sector, Idinye also credited the recent upward positive surge in the Service’s revenue to the strategic leadership of Adeniyi, emphasizing President Bola Tinubu’s astute selection.

While speaking specifically about the benefits of “Operation Whirlwind”, Idinye stressed that it has increased operational efficiency and ultimately minimized smuggling activities, and heightened morale among personnel under Adeniyi’s leadership.

Idinye added that Adeniyi’s zest for excellence will continue to help in protecting Nigeria’s economic interests with unwavering dedication and integrity in fighting those who don’t wish the country well socio-economically.

"I must also applaud him for setting up a team in Customs to combat the diversion of petroleum products outside the shores of Nigeria and to mitigate all forms of sabotage that could affect Nigeria's economy."

The Etsako High Chief also hailed the Nigeria Customs Service for flagging off a sensitisation programme with Songhai Health Trust to conscientise officers on the benefits of accessing the National Health Insurance Scheme.

“This is a way of providing quality health care services to officers that are affordable and stress-free. It is an insurance program that when officers key into it they will have no course to regret it. The new leadership of NCS is leaving no stone unturned to improve on the welfare of its officers by all standards. Paying attention to retired officers, as well as training and retraining of officers in the country are incredibly phenomenal, and all these are happening in less than one year,” Idinye stated.

He however condemned the activities of some hatchet men who never saw anything good in the new leadership of NCS, advising them to stay clear and allow the Comptroller-General to discharge his duties for the greater good of Nigeria.

"There should be no room for distraction, all those self-styled social media influencers and so-called investigative journalists should allow the CG to discharge his duties for the greater good of our nation. He is loaded with many transformative initiatives, therefore these detractors should stop being a cog in the wheel of progress. Criticism is permissive in a constitutional democracy but it must be constructive and not vituperative, vicious or satanic in nature.

"To the Modakeke born Customs boss and the heartthrob to Madam Kikelomo, President, Customs Officers' Wives Association (COWA), I wish you the best of luck in all of your future endeavors, may you continue to fulfil your destiny in life and may you never fail in this national assignment in accentuating the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Cheers to many more years of greater achievements. Congratulations once sir."
