Speaker Bagbin, Asantehene discuss electoral peace ahead of December election

The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin, visited Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II at his palace in Kumasi to discuss initiatives to support the electoral process and ensure peaceful, free, fair, and credible elections in December 2024.

The visit was also to celebrate Father's Day with the Asantehene.

Rt. Hon. Bagbin presented his proposals for ensuring a seamless transition from the Eighth to the Ninth Parliament. Otumfuo Osei Tutu II pledged his total support and commitment to the initiative, assuring that he, along with other traditional leaders, would do everything legally possible to ensure peace before, during, and after the elections.

He called on parties, candidates, and other stakeholders to invest in educating the electorate about the electoral process and the importance of multiparty democracy.

His Royal Majesty further reiterated the Speaker's proposal to have Parliament play an oversight role in facilitating dialogue among Civil Society leaders, Constitutional Commissions such as the EC, NCCE, Media Commission, and CHRAJ, and the leadership of political parties.

He confirmed that such a collaborative approach would create the right environment for peaceful and credible elections.

He commended Parliament, under the leadership of Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, for its sterling leadership in the global parliamentary community. HRM noted Parliament's performance in recent years and expressed pride in its achievements, welcoming the Speaker's initiative.

In response, Mr. Speaker, on behalf of Parliament, thanked Otumfuo for his pledge and guidance. The Speaker assured Otumfuo of his readiness to frequently draw from his wisdom and experience. He prayed for good health, long life, and a peaceful and impactful reign for Otumfuo.

Accompanying the Speaker were the Deputy Clerk of Parliament, Mr. Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, and other senior officials of Parliament.

Rt. Hon. Bagbin also visited the Calvary Charismatic Center to participate in prayers for the nation, Ghana. He expressed his heartfelt gratitude to Otumfuo Nana Osei Tutu II and the people of Kumasi for their warm and gracious reception.
