The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has launched an investigation after reports that a patient was abandoned in a bush by hospital staff.
The incident is alleged to have occurred at the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba in the Central Region.
According to reports, a patient was on admission at the hospital but after her relatives failed to show up, she was taken in an ambulance and left in a wheelchair in a bush in Ojobi, where she claimed to be from.
Tragically, the woman was later found dead.
In a statement dated June 14, Dr. Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, Director-General of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), said the leadership has been "drawn to a media story about a patient allegedly abandoned in a bush."
It said the GHS has initiated investigations "to establish the authenticity or otherwise of the story in line with the existing practices in the public service to enable it take appropriate action(s)."
In a direct warning, Dr. Kuma-Aboagye added: ""Anyone found to be connected with this unfortunate incident will be severely dealt in accordance with provisions of the Service's Code of Conduct."
The statement appealed for patience as investigations are carried out.
